Traveling With Kids: Make Your Trips Feel Like It Was Made For THEM!
My favorite places to travel with kids...everywhere! One of my favorite parts of traveling with kids is finding ways to connect the places we're exploring to whatever they're obsessed with at the moment. You don't have to take your Star Wars fanatic to Disneyland. Try exploring Athens or wander the deserts of the Sahara. Tatooine, anyone? 😉
When we visited Greece, our guide wove Star Wars so beautifully into our tour of ancient Athens that our son started asking deeper questions than she'd received from most full-grown adults. The Star Wars obsession has since faded, but the history stuck. It wasn't just something he read in a book. He experienced it, connected with it, and made it his own.
That's the magic of a great guide. They help you see a destination through a new lens, connecting your child's existing interests to the stories, culture, and landscapes around them.
Sometimes, that connection becomes a lifelong memory or sparks a curiosity that lasts long after the trip ends. In Costa Rica, his fascination with animals led to an interest in becoming a nature guide. These days, that dream has evolved into a passion for sustainability and protecting wildlife. The specifics changed, but the curiosity kept growing.
The point isn't to choose a destination based on your child's current obsession. It's to find the connections between the places you want to explore and the things that already spark their curiosity.
And remember, travel doesn't have to mean crossing the globe. It can be an intentional, curious walk around your neighborhood park. Looking for bugs, noticing the trees, wondering where a creek leads. It's not the distance that makes travel meaningful. It's how we engage with the world. The goal isn't to show our kids the whole world. It's to help them stay curious about the world they're already in.
What's your favorite travel connection story with your kid?
