Arrive in Liberia, Transfer to Monteverde

Arrival in Costa Rica at the Liberia International Airport (LIR) After passing through immigration you will meet your driver for a private transfer to Monteverde (2.5 hours).

Monteverde is both a community and forest reserve. The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is a world-famous forest where large trees are nearly completely covered by thick, wet and heavy “carpets” of small plants including orchids, and wild relatives of familiar tropical “house plants”-- philodendrons, ferns and ficus trees-- reach enormous sizes.  The beautiful Resplendent Quetzal spends about ½ the year here during its breeding season and the forest is home to hundreds of other bird and mammal species.

The communities of Monteverde, Cerro Plano, and Santa Elena outside the reserve are where a large selection of hotels, souvenir stores, restaurants, and other attractions such as butterfly gardens, horse rentals, canopy tours, an orchid garden and an excellent new educational “Bat Jungle” exhibit are found.

Cloud Forest Zip Line and Hanging Bridges

Today you will visit the Selvatura Park, a cloud forest conservation project, including tours of the Canopy Zip Line, Sky Walk Hanging Bridges Tour, Butterfly and Insect exhibits.

Here you can traverse on 15 cables and zip lines through the tropical cloud forest canopy by a system of mesh-covered metal tree platforms, steel rails, zip lines and suspended bridges. The tour includes 4544 feet of trails, 15 cables from 131 feet to 2525 feet long, and 18 platforms with panoramic views of the Guanacaste province, San Carlos & Puntarenas lowlands.

The Selvatura Tree Top Walkways, located along a 1.7 mile trail, is a bridge system designed to be walked by people of all ages. The bridge system has 8 suspension bridges, totaling a distance of 1,200 feet, and 90% of the trail goes through primary cloud forest.  This is one of the best methods of learning about the complexity and beauty of the cloud forest.

Next, venture into a different world and explore 20 species of butterflies. Learn about their life cycle, their special abilities and behaviors that have helped them evolve throughout thousands of years. Enjoy a guided walk inside one of the world's largest live butterfly exhibitions with an area of over 29,000 square feet (2,700 square meters). Come and enjoy all the wonders that you may discover in this marvelous World of Butterflies.

Then admire the "Jewels of the Rain Forest," the world's third largest private insect collection. Take a close look at thousands of insects, butterflies and other wondrous species from all over the world, presented in a way never seen before.
