Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve
Located at nearly five thousand feet elevation in the Tilaran Range of northwest Costa Rica, Monteverde is both a community and forest reserve. The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, described as ‘the jewel in the crown of cloud forests’ by National Geographic and one of the world’s premiere destinations for naturalists, where large trees are nearly completely covered by thick, wet and heavy “carpets” of small plants including orchids, and wild relatives of familiar tropical “house plants”- philodendrons, ferns and ficus trees - reach enormous sizes. The beautiful Resplendent Quetzal spends about ½ the year here during its breeding season and the forest is home to hundreds of other bird and mammal species. Watch brightly-coloured birds at play in the Curi-Cancha Reserve; take a guided hike or horse ride through the dense jungle; watch electric blue frogs jump about at the famous Frog Pond, or take a dip in the pools around the San Luis Waterfall. Must-sees include the Butterfly Gardens, Orchid House, Selvatura treetop suspension bridges, and coffee, chocolate, and sugarcane tour.
