Waves are generally of moderate or smaller size, and break gently. Currents are minimal. These conditions are good for safe swimming for people of all ages. There are rocks in some places, and areas that are rock free. At high tide the beach is narrow and steeper and the waves break closer to shore.

Other great outdoor activities are conveniently located nearby and make for great outings from Las Catalinas:

Surfing – there are many world class surfing spots located near Las Catalinas. The swell comes generally from the south, so Las Catalinas is partially sheltered from that swell by the point of Cabo Vela. Just around the corner, a 25 minute drive from Las Catalinas, is the famous surfing beach Playa Grande. Continue south and there are a string of many more great surfing spots. To the north, best reached by boat, are the famous Witch’s Rock and Ollie’s Point.

Sailing -The excellent Costa Rican Sailing Center is located in Potrero, just a few minutes’ drive or a bike ride away. With a whole fleet of new boats and expert instruction, Bahia Potrero is a wonderful place to sail, with good sailing to be had nearly every day. Abundant marine life, including dolphins, whales, manta rays, and abundant turtles, and some of the most beautiful coast you will ever see. There are also a variety of larger charter boats available in the area. Afternoon sailing, snorkeling and sunset viewing trips are excellent outings from Las Catalinas.

Fishing – The waters off Las Catalinas offer some of the finest deep sea fishing in the world. There are a large number of local boats available for hire. Marlin, sailfish, dorado, roosterfish, and tuna are among the local fish to be caught.

Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve Located at nearly five thousand feet elevation in the Tilaran Range of northwest Costa Rica, Monteverde is both a community and forest reserve. The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve described as ‘the jewel in the crown of cloud forests’ by National Geographic and one of the world’s premier destinations for naturalists, where large trees are nearly completely covered by thick, wet, and heavy “carpets” of small plants including orchids, and wild relatives of familiar tropical “house plants”- philodendrons, ferns, and ficus trees - reach enormous sizes. The beautiful Resplendent Quetzal spends about ½ the year here during its breeding season and the forest is home to hundreds of other bird and mammal species. Watch brightly-colored birds at play in the Curi-Cancha Reserve; take a guided hike or horse ride through the dense jungle; watch electric blue frogs jump about at the famous Frog Pond, or take a dip in the pools around the San Luis Waterfall. Must-sees include the Butterfly Gardens, Orchid House, Selvatura treetop suspension bridges, and coffee, chocolate, and sugarcane tour.

Recommended Tours:
Private Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve Walking Tour Founded in 1972, the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is one of the most famous reserves in the world and one of the most important private protected areas of Costa Rica, with an area of ??3,500 hectares. This reserve was elected in 2007 as one of the Seven Wonders of Costa Rica. Geographical, topographical, and climatic conditions of the Monteverde Reserve have created the amazing biodiversity found within the Reserve. In its forests are four ecological life zones, which give place to different ecosystems inhabited by hundreds of species of mammals, birds, butterflies, amphibians, reptiles, insects, and spiders, a diversity of mosses, epiphytes and other plants are present and typical of the cloud forest.

Manuel Antonio: Traveling southbound through the stunning Central Pacific, the small agricultural town of Quepos welcomes visitors, and a tree-lined, cliff-top road leads to Manuel Antonio offering glimpses of spectacular forest and beach. This renowned touristic town sits up in the hills overlooking the vibrant Pacific Ocean framed by green, luscious vegetation. The highlight here is the marvelous Manuel Antonio National Park, an amazing combination of rainforests that grows right down to the three white sand beaches that are part of the park, which protects several habitats, including primary and secondary forest, mangroves, beach vegetation, and marine resources. There is no development inside the park but along the main road across Manuel Antonio, there are dozens of hotels surrounded by tropical gardens, and a variety of dining and recreation options, the wharf and modern marina serve as a departure point for sport-fishing and memorable boat trips.

Recommended Tours:
Damas Mangrove Boat Tour
is one of our most popular experiences in Manuel Antonio Area. This adventure of Costa Rican natural history, exotic flora, and fauna is highly recommended for any naturalist, wanting to experience the mangrove ecosystem. Our highly trained, bilingual guides and naturalists steer you peacefully and comfortably in ultra-quiet estuary boats as the wildlife comes to you – sometimes right into the boat! Experience curious families of monkeys as they migrate across the mangrove ecosystem, different exotic trees. And keep your eyes out for caimans, sloths, crocodiles, boas, white face monkeys, egrets among other species. Finally, end your adventure with a relaxing yet rewarding meal in typical Costa Rican flavor at a local “hot spot” restaurant before you return to your hotel. Note: Departure time depends on tides

Manuel Antonio National Park Nature Walking Tour offers a leisurely walk with a naturalist guide, highly trained in biodiversity. Explore and enjoy the beautiful beaches and of course the large number of flora and fauna hosted in this magical place. The pace of the experience is determined by your interests. See sloths and numerous species of monkeys traveling through the treetops, anteaters, iguanas resting in the rainforest and hear the singing of various birds. Hopefully, we can find one of the only remaining 1,000 Titi or squirrel monkeys, endangered species living only here, our biological corridor Manuel National Park. The nature walk is about 21⁄2 hours ending with some local fresh fruits and refreshments.
